
DANICA NOVGORODOFF was awarded the Yoto Kate Greenaway Medal in 2022, the UK’s most prestigious award for children’s book illustration. She was awarded a 2015 New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in literature, was named Sarabande Books’ 2016 writer in residence, and received a 2020 Café Royal Cultural Foundation grant in literature. Her art and writing have been published in the New Yorker, MoMA magazine, Best American Comics, The Believer, Artforum, Esquire and others. She has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony, Blue Mountain Center, VCCA, Willapa Bay, and Brush Creek. Her books include the graphic novels Slow Storm; The Undertaking of Lily Chen; and Refresh Refresh; the cookbook The Simple Art of Rice, with Chef JJ Johnson, and the picture books Alexander von Humboldt: Explorer, Naturalist, and Environmental Pioneer. She also adapted the New York Times bestselling Long Way Down by National Book Award winner, Jason Reynolds. Her most recent project is illustrating the children’s book, A Better World Is Possible: Global Youth Confront the Climate Crisis, written by Meera Subramanian (2026).
