March 24, 2011From PRX.org: Ina May Gaskin has practiced for nearly forty years at The Farm Midwifery Center in Summertown, Tenn, which she founded in 1971. The center is noted for its low rates of intervention, morbidity and mortality. She is the only midwife for whom an obstetric maneuver has been named (the Gaskin maneuver).
March 4, 2011Birth Matters is different from [Ina May Gaskin's] other books because it is a history of birth, an exploration of why birth changed from midwife driven to obstetrics and surgery, and how we can get it back to being about women, not profit. Birth is not only a feminist issue, it is a personal issue. Birth shapes mothers and fathers; and how babies are born can shape them as well. Birth should be respected and honored, not treated as a medical issue in need of solving. - Kim Rosas
