Mother’s Day the Natural Way
May 24, 2013
CBS Sunday Morning aired a segment on Mother’s Day about writer and mother of authentic midwifery, Ina May Gaskin. In the 70s, Gaskin and five friends founded The Farm Midwifery Center in Tennessee, a refuge for women unhappy with the thought of birthing in a hospital setting. There, Gaskin has helped birth over 1,200 babies. The segment calls Gaskin “the unlikely leader of the midwife movement,” and said that she “created change from the woods of Tennessee” and “impacted women globally.”
Midwifery is a centuries-old practice of guiding a woman though pregnancy, labor, birth, and the post-partum period. Thought midwifery doesn’t necessarily mean birth without medication or hospitals, Gaskin cites the problems with hospital births as “too many drugs, too many c-sections, too many inductions.” Humans have the capacity for natural birth the same as any other mammal.
“Don’t criticize nature,” she says in the segment, “stand in awe of it.”
In addition to her work as a midwife, Gaskin is also a the author of several books including Birth Matters: A Midwife’s Manifesta (Seven Stories Press, 2011).

The Right to Deliver… However She Wants It: Ina May Gaskin in the Huffington Post
July 27, 2012
“The U.S. is one of four countries in the world with a rising maternal death rate. California reported a tripling in the maternal death rate between 1996 and 2006. This problem, in my opinion, should occupy more of our attention than the tizzy over the home birth rate, which affects such a small portion of our population.”Ina May Gaskin, author of Birth Matters: A Midwife’s Manifesta, is a fierce force in the choice for women to conduct home-birthing. In America, only a very small portion of women choose to conduct home births. Yet the US’s maternal death rate is, as Gaskin puts it, ”not enviable.” Though home-birthing isn’t a massive phenomena, some countries use police force to pressure women away from midwife-assisted birth. Why so staunchy on women’s choices? The answer isn’t clear.

Interview with Ina May Gaskin on Blue Milk
March 27, 2012
“Midwifery knowledge can disappear in a remarkably short time (10-20 years), to the point that women can no longer imagine what it might be like to have a midwife. (I know this, because I was that woman when I was pregnant and giving birth to my first). This is how you get a mass of infantilized women who may put up with dangerous and uncomfortable practices for a couple of generations before they get enough gumption to put things right. This is what a growing number of us are working on now in the US!”
