Greg Palast, author of the NYT bestselling book Billionaires & Ballot Bandits, reveals why the U.S. elite (aka: Big Oil) is so intent on ousting Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez…..MONEY!
Who saw that coming?
Chavez was on very friendly terms with Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton, so what changed? What made G.W. Bush’s administration provide intelligence and funding to get rid of the popular (well, with many) president?
Palast lays it out:
“Just after Bush’s inauguration in 2001, Chavez’s congress voted in a new “Law of Hydrocarbons.” Henceforward, Exxon, British Petroleum, Shell Oil and Chevron would get to keep 70 percent of the sales revenues from the crude they sucked out of Venezuela. Not bad, considering the price of oil was rising toward $100 a barrel.
But to the oil companies, which had bitch-slapped Venezuela’s prior government into giving them 84 percent of the sales price, a cut to 70 percent was “no bueno.” Worse, Venezuela had been charging a joke of a royalty – just 1 percent – on “heavy” crude from the Orinoco Basin.
Greg Palast reports: In Ohio, African-American Turnout Threatened by Reduced Early Voting and Faulty Ballots
November 6, 2012
“Ohio will probably pick our president today” says investigative reporter and author of the NYT bestseller Billionaires & Ballot Bandits Greg Palast who is reporting now from Ohio.
As in all recent elections, Ohio again is a crucial state to win for either presidential candidate. And once again, Ohio is at the center of charges of systematic suppression of the African-American vote. In a report for Democracy Now!, investigative reporter Greg Palast discovers that some early voters in the Buckeye State have received the wrong ballots.
Greg reveals that some early voters in Dayton, OH, who have stood in line for hours, have received “applications for absentee ballots” and were told that early voting = absentee ballots. This is not always the case, as between 1 and 3 million absentee ballots will be discarded. As Greg says, is this early voting or early voting suppression?

At a press conference yesterday in Toledo, Bob King, President of the United Automobile Workers (UAW), announced that his union and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) have filed a formal complaint with the US Office of Government Ethics in Washington stating that Gov. Romney improperly hid a profit of $15.3 million to $115.0 million in Ann Romney’s so-called “blind” trust.
The union chief says, “The American people have a right to know about Gov. Romney’s potential conflicts of interest, such as the profits his family made from the auto rescue. It’s time for Gov. Romney to disclose or divest.”
“While Romney was opposing the rescue of one of the nation’s most important manufacturing sectors, he was building his fortunes with his Delphi investor group, making his fortunes off the misfortunes of others,” King added.
The Romneys’ gigantic windfall was hidden inside an offshore corporation inside a limited partnership inside a trust which both concealed the gain and reduces taxes on it.

Did you hear what Mitt Romney said in last night’s debate? That he would never do anything to hurt the US auto industry? Oh really?
Says Greg Palast, author of the NYT bestseller Billionaires & Ballot Bandits, ”as I reported in this week’s Nation magazine cover story “Mitt Romney’s Bail-out Bonanza“, the Romneys are in a special partnership with the vulture fund that bought Delphi, the former GM auto parts division.
The Romney vulture fund investment syndicate shipped every single UAW production job – EVERY job – to China.
Just after Nation broke the story, Washington newsletter The Hill received the Romneys admission of profiteering:
“Romney’s campaign did not deny that he profited from the auto bailout in an email to The Hill, but it said the the report showed the Detroit intervention was ‘misguided.’”

Teaching for a Change’s Busboys & Poets Bookstore welcomes Greg Palast to speak about Billionaires and Ballot Bandits on Monday, October 22nd at 6:30pm.
Billionaires & Ballot Bandits names the filthy-rich sugar-daddies who are super-funding the Super-PACs of both parties—billionaires with nicknames like “The Ice Man,” “The Vulture” and, of course, The Brothers Koch. Told with Palast’s no-holds-barred, reporter-on-the-beat style, the facts as he lays them out are staggering. What emerges in B&BB is the never-before-told-story of the epic battle being fought behind the scenes between the old money banking sector that still supports Obama, and the new hedge fund billionaires like Paul Singer who not only support Romney but also are among his key economic advisors.

Greg Palast breaks news in The Nation and Democracy Now that Mitt Romney made at least $15 million in the auto bailout
October 18, 2012
Because Mitt Romney refuses to divulge his 2009 tax returns, journalist Greg Palast cannot prove just how many millions of dollars Romney made off of the auto bailout. But it is at least $15.3 million and likely more than $100 million. In today’s Nation cover story, Palast, who first broke the “hanging chad” story, and in 2000 revealed how Katherine Harris removed thousands of innocent Black citizens from voter rolls as “felons,” exposes that while Romney was saying “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt” (New York Times OpEd, 2008), he was plotting a 3000% return on his investment in its resuscitation.

Check out this review in the New York Times Sunday Book Review:
“Palast’s prose has a zippy, breathless quality that might put you in mind of Michael Moore — ‘How does a ballot get spoiled? Not by leaving it out of the fridge’ — but he’s also an expert in statistics who reports regularly for the BBC, Rolling Stone and other outlets.”

Billionaires & Ballot Bandits: How to Steal an Election in 9 Easy Steps by Greg Palast with a 50-page comic by Ted Rall and an intro by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is OUT NOW!
AlterNet recently ran a great excerpt.
Here’s a sample, below:
Stop me if you heard this one. See, these ten nuns walk into a polling station in Indiana and the guy in charge says, “Whoa, Sisters! What do think you’re doing?”
“Voting,” says Sister Mary.
“Well, not here, ladies; not without your ID!” He demanded their driver’s licenses, but the ten quite elderly Sisters of the Holy Cross, including a 98 year-old, had long ago given up cruising.
“Scram, Sis!” said the man, and kicked their habits right out of the polling station.
