Stephanie McMillan interviewed at Pacific Free Press
August 3, 2010
The content of my cartoons is absolutely determined by my work as an activist. Without that experience, I would know much less about how the system works or how to combat it. The purpose of my work is to expose the crimes of the system in a way that’s accessible to readers, and to use ridicule to inspire contempt for those who run things. I think if we can laugh at those in power, we will fear them less, which makes us stronger about fighting back. The stories I tell in my comics, the points I make, are all intended to help inspire resistance, to help people who are on that path to make sense of things, and to cheer them on. Resistance and revolution are at the core of my life’s purpose. Art is merely a means, one way I have found that I can help further this objective. — Stephanie McMillan, artist behind As The World Burns

Stephanie McMillan’s “The Corporate Shill: The Buying And Selling of Jared Diamond”
December 9, 2009
Here’s Stephanie McMillan — fantastic cartoonist and co-author of As The World Burns with Derrick Jensen — with an article for the blog Marxist Update on Jared Diamond’s December 5 New York Times op-ed: “Will Big Business Save The Earth?”
[Diamond] talks about the challenges that Coca-Cola faces in finding acceptable sources of water, and tries to convince us that “Hence Coca-Cola’s survival compels it to be deeply concerned with problems of water scarcity, energy, climate change and agriculture.” But the obvious point remains unsaid: Coke is not a necessity. It is in fact harmful to those who drink it. We don’t NEED to solve the problem of how Coca-Cola obtains water, or provide incentives for them to do it less destructively, because they could just fucking stop making it. Now there’s a simple solution.

Stephanie McMillan interviewed at Scott Nickel’s blog
November 30, 2009
Stephanie McMillan: [As the World Burns is] a response to the lie that individual lifestyle changes are the solution to ecocide. For example, Al Gore’s movie An Inconvenient Truth lays out the problem very well, but at the end is the usual tired “what you can do” list that everyone pushes because they don’t impinge too much on our “non-negotiable way of life.” These lists always include things like taking shorter showers and changing light bulbs to more energy-efficient ones, and never include things like stopping industrial production and overthrowing the system that puts profit ahead of a living world.

As the World Burns reviewed in the Broward/Palm Beach New Times
August 12, 2009
. . . Though it doesn’t overtly state it, As The World Burns, at its core, is a lesson in anarchist philosophy, implying that the Earth would be better off without a government beholden to an industrial economy. Initially, the graphic novel’s underlying message may seem heavy-handed and preachy, but the writing is so acutely entertaining that the message doesn’t feel force-fed. Despite all the dark humor and doom-and-gloom, the book actually ends on a hopeful note. Plus, the drawings are so darn cute. — Broward/Palm Beach New Times
