Author hired to write sequel to Larsson series – Eva Gabrielsson’s reaction

December 19, 2013

The Swedish publisher of the best-selling “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” trilogy said Tuesday it has hired an author to write a sequel to the series by Stieg Larsson, who died in 2004, reports the Green Bay Press Gazette.

Larsson’s longtime partner, Eva Gabrielsson, who has been in a legal dispute with Erland and Joakim over the rights to the trilogy, told daily newspaper Aftonbladet that she finds it “tasteless” to try to make more money out of something that is already so successful. “I guess I think it’s greedy. It’s already a multimillion industry,” she was quoted as saying. Gabrielsson and Larsson never married, for serious reasons of safety, as Larsson was a target of right-wing hate groups, which he worked for years exposing and speaking out against. When Larsson passed away suddenly without a will, Gabrielsson was left without the rights to his work or to any of the profits of a project which she contributed hugely to.

Here is the real inside story—not the one about the Stieg Larsson phenomenon, but rather the love story of a man and a woman whose lives came to be guided by politics and love, coffee and activism, writing and friendship. Only one person in the world knows that story well enough to tell it with authority.

Eva Gabrielsson and Stieg Larsson shared everything, starting when they were both eighteen until his untimely death thirty-two years later at the age of fifty. In “There Are Things I Want You to Know” About Stieg Larsson and Me, Eva Gabrielsson accepts the daunting challenge of telling the story of their shared life steeped in love and sharpened in the struggle for justice and human rights.
