Subhankar Banerjee, photographer, journalist, activist, and editor of Arctic Voices: Resistance at the Tipping Point (paperback edition on Oct.8th) gives an update on the latest findings of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
As you know last Friday, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released the first part of a multi-part Fifth Assessment Report. More than a thousand scientists from around the globe contributed to it, the team looked at more than 9,000 scientific publications, 2/3rd of which was published since 2007 (when the last IPCC report AR4 was published), and after all that, representatives from 190 nations signed off on what is called the Summary for Policy Makers that was released on Friday. The findings are consistent with what they had said in 2007, but this time with irrefutable evidence.
But the climate deniers are working overtime to discredit the findings and spew their irresponsible and dangerous misinformation. And, if you view my interview with Jaisal Noor of The Real News Network on the IPCC report and then look at the comments posted below, you’ll know that the climate deniers are indeed working overtime, even on weekend. We did a two-part interview. The first part has aired already. VIEW PART I HERE.
And the remarkable George Monbiot wrote in the Guardian: ”Already, a thousand blogs and columns insist the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s new report is a rabid concoction of scare stories whose purpose is to destroy the global economy.”
Climate science is under severe attack in Canada also. In another story last week The Real News Network reported that the climate scientists are being gagged by the Harper government in Canada “causing an 80 percent decrease in the coverage of environmental stories.” Gagging of scientists by governments is not news, Ronald Reagan did it, George W. Bush did it, Barack Obama did it–but what is happening now is unprecedented. Something I’ve been writing about for several years now, Monbiot put it quite bluntly: “[The governments] sagely agree with the need to do something to avert the catastrophe…while promoting the industries that cause it.”
And you can read my latest piece “Destabilization of Arctic Sea Ice Would Be Game Over for Climate”, today on Common Dreams and Truthout.
I sincerely urge all fellow environmental journalists to please look at the UN IPCC report, and write, challenge any disinformation that the climate deniers are putting out there. And please do not continue what Seymour Hersh recently said: “carrying water for Obama.”
