April 11, 2013 7:00pmLuis Negrón and Suzanne Jill Levine Book Event Sponsored by the Bureau of General Services: Queer Division Thursday, April 11th @ 7:00pm Strange Loop Gallery 27 Orchard Street
New York, NY
Author Luis Negrón and translator Suzanne Jill Levine will be at the Strange Loop Gallery on Thursday, April 11th to read from Mundo Cruel, Negrón’s debut collection of short stories.
Nine short stories, expertly translated, open a door into working class Santurce, Puerto Rico, where shoddy medical offices, Catholic churches, Mormon temples, and Santeria storefronts line the sunbaked streets. Here, a bumbling prostitute-turned-fugitive bewilderingly avoids capture. Back-biting mothers hand down judgment on their neighbors and the world at large from their front lawns. A desperate dog-owner will do anything to have his precious animal sent to a taxidermist. A young Chosen One with a curious gift helps his fellow parishioners find God.
Both author and translator will be available for question and answer, as well as book signings. This event is sponsored by the Bureau of General Services: Queer Division.
