Bookend Event: Brooklyn Book Festival celebrates The Graphic Canon with Small Demons at The Bell House on 9/18
September 18, 2012 12:17pm
Join Seven Stories Press and Small Demons on Tuesday, September 18th at 7pm at The Bell House for a unique literary event sponsored by the Brooklyn Book Festival. The event features a multimedia presentation of The Graphic Canon, a three-volume anthology of classic world literature adapted by artists and illustrators, called the “graphic publishing literary event of the year” (Publisher’s Weekly) and “an exciting new benchmark for comics” (Library Journal). The Graphic Canon is the brainchild of Russ Kick, a bestselling author/anthologist who embarked on a colossal project to re-tell the literature of the world in comics and visuals. All together the three volumes feature over 200 pieces of literature, drawn by 150 different artists and illustrators.
Art from all three volumes of The Graphic Canon will be presented by Seven Stories publisher Dan Simon and as well as contributors Seymour Chwast (The Divine Comedy, Vol. 1), Shawn Cheng (a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Vol. 2), and Seth Tobocman (a Frederick Douglass speech, Vol. 2). The Graphic Canon Volume 1: From The Epic of Gilgamesh to Shakespeare to Dangerous Liaisons (released May 22) and The Graphic Canon Volume 2: From “Kubla Khan” to the Bronte Sisters to The Picture of Dorian Gray (being released October 2) will be on sale and the artists will be available to sign copies after the event. The Graphic Canon Volume 3: From Heart of Darkness to Hemingway to Infinite Jest is being released in March 2013.
Small Demons is a Los Angeles based company that believes powerful and interesting things can happen when you connect all the details of books. They will be using their expertise to craft an entirely unprecedented multimedia experience connecting the people, places, landscapes, sounds, and references between many of classic pieces of literature included in all three volumes of The Graphic Canon.
