Description

It is only right that the history of a nation that was built by slaves, immigrants, workers, and women—and wrested from Native Americans—be told from the point of view of these primary sources. Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States has sold one and a half million copies and inaugurated a new kind of history book. Now, here is the long-awaited, two-volume, affordably-priced, young-adult version of the history book that influenced a generation.

Volume One
begins with a look at Columbus’s arrival through the eyes of the Arawak Indians and leads the reader through the wars and rebellions of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries to the strikes of the industrial age. Volume Two guides the reader through the twentieth century, including the war on terror that is among the forces shaping the United States today.

A shipyard worker and Air Force bombardier before he became a historian, HOWARD ZINN is the author of numerous books, including his epic masterpiece, A People’s History of the United States and a number of recent books published by Seven Stories Press: Voices of a People’s History of the United States and Terrorism and War, both written with Anthony Arnove, and The Zinn Reader. Professor emeritus of political science at Boston University, Howard Zinn is the recipient of the Upton Sinclair Award, the Thomas Merton Award, the Eugene Debs Award, and the Lannan Literary Prize. His plays include Emma and Marx in Soho. He lives in Auburndale, Massachusetts, together with his wife, the artist Roslyn Zinn.

REBECCA STEFOFF is the author of many books for children and young adults, including a biography of the Shawnee chieftain Tecumseh and her adaption of Ronald Takaki’s award-winning history of Asian Americans, Strangers from a Different Shore.

One of the most important books I have ever read in a long life of reading . . . a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future.
